A fairy tale ending to PCCGB season for Slidesports and Ellinas.
Heading to Brands Hatch for the last round of the 2018 Porsche Carrera Cup GB the writing was on the wall: 8 points off the Championship lead was perhaps a tall order to achieve in what is just the second season for both driver and team in the prestigious competition. Often branded as the fastest one make production car series, the Porsche Carrera Cup is in its 18th year although only 2 teams have ever won the Championship in all those years.
Going into qualifying at Brands we had a few minor issues and Tio managed to put the car 6th on the grid, whilst our main competitor Dino Zamparelli was on the front row. First race Sunday morning saw Lady Luck smile in our direction for a change as leader Zamparelli spun from 2nd and rejoined in 12th position. Ellinas on the other hand pounced and brought the car home in second place.
The Championship points were now tied, and the second race would determine the outcome of the 2018 Series Champion.
With a reversed grid for the second race, Ellinas started from the second row, and managed to get up to 3rd position, whilst Zamparelli was able to make his way into 5th. This is how it stayed for the majority of the 17 lap race of the famous Brands Hatch GP circuit, and the Slidesports crew climbed the pit wall to cheer their driver home as the new Champion.
Whilst Tio Ellinas won the series outright, and the PRO category, there were plenty of trophies in the Slidesports motorhome at the end of the day, as both Dave Fairbrother and Richard Hawken got on the podium in race 1, with a 2nd and a 3rd respectively in the AM category, whilst Fairbrother achieved a 3rd place in race 2, making it 5 podiums out of a possible 6 for the weekend.
It was an emotional end to the season for the Slidesports crew becoming only the 3rd team ever to lift the Porsche Carrera Cup Championship, and needless to say the champagne was flowing at the team truck after the race.
